Hi guys,

I've asked this before, but I really need help and can't make up my mind.

I don't have any research background, should I spend my year off (as I apply this summer) doing research/co-authoring a paper OR being a paid dental assistant?

What do you think is best for acceptance, and why?

Please help!😕

If the research position is not paid, do the dental assistant position.

If research is paid, do research.

depends on how much dental experience you already have, if you already have done dental assisting, then it might be more wholesome to do research if you haven't done any research.

Hi there,

Just wondering where u are doing ur dental assisting? I've been looking everywhere, but haven't found any luck.

thanks

I'd recommend doing the research. Many schools look favorably upon research. I didn't get in on my first application, and when I applied on my second app, I spent a year and a half doing research and it got me into 4 schools....all of whom have large research components. It also led to many conversation in the interviews, and many of my interviewers were impressed with the research.

Just make sure you do enough shadowing in dentistry to make sure the career is perfect for you, and then do the research. Either way, I think it will really help you get in...

this.

Anybody can dental assist, it's very common. Research is definitely not as common, requires more aptitude to participate in, and sets an applicant apart from the rest of the competition.

Thanks guys
The position is paid, so its a full time research assistant at UMD's Medical School.

Hopefully I get the positions 🙂 and I'll take it!

Would mind sharing the names of those 4 schools?
I'm also debating whether I should do research or dental assisting for the upcoming year (after I submit the app)

research especially if you can get your name on some papers.
