Supposing someone is interested in a few specialties of higher competitiveness who wishes to sample a few of them through electives, to what extent can research experience serve as a crutch for a more broad elective experience as opposed to the typical 100% guns blazing approach for one specialty? I guess I'm wondering whether at a certain point research experience is considered more than clear dedication to a particular specialty based on electives or number of reference letters in a given discipline. By research experience I mean PhD with many publications. Also assuming you are not a stranger to faculty in any of these specialties.

Thanks!
