Hi, I am a college junior premed student and have applied to numerous research internships this summer. I recently was accepted to one at the NIH and one at my in-state medical school. I am very interested in attending my state medical school and will be applying there this summer once the AMCAS app opens in May 2020 (for the incoming class of 2021).

The research focus/topic for both opportunities is very similar and of interest to me. So, with everything else being equal, would my med school application for this medical school be stronger and my chances of acceptance be higher if I accept the research position at this medical school this summer instead of at the NIH?

Would being on the med school campus over the summer and having the opportunity to network and make contacts increase my chances of acceptance at this medical school?

My grades and MCAT score are above the average/mean for this school and my ECs are all very competitive for this school.

Or would taking the medical school research position over the NIH position not matter one bit in my med school application as the research position really wouldn't count as "demonstrated interest" and/or the med school really doesn't care about "demonstrated interest" and any contacts I make not make a difference in how the med school views me as an applicant?

NIH.

Thanks! Any specifics you can give as to why you would go with the NIH position? I also was leaning more toward NIH because of the breadth of research and the connections I could make there.

NIH is hands down well recognized everywhere. The connections will be invaluable.

you’re interested in your state school right now but you shouldn’t place all your bets on that one place. Your interests may change drastically and when applying you’ll see that casting a wide net is imperative to getting an acceptance to a med school.

aim high. The NIH on your resume and the research experience there can take you far if you work hard.
