It wont be viewed negatively as long as it is productive. MANY people in my class took years. Those that rejoined my class from the year above (those coming off research) matched very well.

Research years are becoming more common. It will only be a red flag if you did nothing with your research year. Obviously no need to go at a breakneck pace but also need to have something to talk about when asked what you did during your research year. In terms of timing, after MS2 year is probably the best time for that.

Research year is generally done between M3/4, not that it matters.
