I was not able to do any research in college at all. I had to work full time to pay for school. Now i am ready to apply hopefully next cycle. I am volunteering at the hospital (6hrs week) and at an inner city tutoring program (4-5 hrs week) while working FT and taking the science classes (8units now) i was missing.

Now the question.. How important in research? Should i replace something with research? I cant add anything more(no time).

If you do a quick search in the forums, for MD research is a plus for mid tiers and below schools but doesn't give you that much a boost if you have extensive clinical hours. However, research experience is imperative for the top 20 research based schools (Harvard, Duke, etc)

Non-trads are cut some slack for lack of research but it depends on where you apply to. Research heavy schools will like to see research. Schools with primary care focus would still like to see it but it won't kill your app if you don't have it. The key for research is that it needs to be sustained over a period of time. A short stint won't add much to your application.
