Hey guys, I needed some input.
I'm planning on doing some anesthesia research and I'm torn between clinical vs. basic research. Which one would be better and beneficial for someone trying to obtain a residency. I'm not sure on the project specifics, but the basic involves mice and brain hypoxia. The clinical research I will learn more about after I meet with the coordinator this week. I'm hoping to get some OR time as well. How do you decide which research to pick other than chances of publication or interest level? Do you prefer clinical or basic? Pros and cons would be helpful. Thanks

I have done both types of research and I would say the clinical was better in my experience. It was easier to get published and from the meetings and things I've gone to it seems travel better - ie more people interested in it than in mice or western blot, pcr's etc. My stats were above avereage but not top 10% by any means but the research got me some great interviews and I think a great match at my number one - so I think if you can put up with the headache go for it I found it to be an overall a good experience. I have been on both sides though, a good and bad research project I would say make sure whatever one you choose that the goal is to publish or at least present a poster 2 or 3 times. That should be expectation by you and your mentor/boss. Research doesn't really count if you can't cite it and can make for some painful work with no benefit. Good luck and feel free to Im with any questions!

No brain does well with hypoxia whether goat, pig or pigeon brain. OK research has already been done and yours will add little if any to the vast knowledge base. Focus on scores, grades and LORs to get your residency slot and blow off the research. As a 4th year med student I did a 1 month elective in anesthesia research and to this day couldn't tell ya what I researched. I do know that what ever I researched didn't make a hill of beans in the world or the anesthesia world for that matter. Regards, ----Zip
