Hi all,

I am a first year medical student considering two summer research projects and I will appreciate some feedback.

The first project is specifically in radiation oncology with a PHD in the Department. The pros for this project are that it is specifically in Rad onc and I get to work in the department and get to know people. The only con I can think of is that the PI is a PHD, not an MD.

The second project is to work on a general oncology project with a famous MD Heme/onc attending. The obvious pro is that the attending is very famous and I think will be a good mentor. The con is that it is not specifically rad onc.

So, what do you guys/gals think? Should I go for specifically rad onc with a not so famous PHD or general onc with a famous MD?

Both projects are basic science and I like them equally. They are actually quite similar in terms of the biology/molecular techniques so that's a wash.

If the med onc guy is really famouse enought that rad onc interviewers and PDs with know his name, go with that. It'll make a good letter of rec later too. If not, go with the rad onc guy. If either one will give you a paper or evan an abstract, rather than just "experience," that's better.
