Hey guys,

Question....In regards to research, does it have to be your own conducted research?? I am thinking of volunteering my time to help on of the nurses at the hospital with the research she has already started, is that sufficient enough? So hard finding research opportunities.

Hi, I doubt it has to be your own research, although it definitely does hurt if you conduct your own. Also, try asking one of your professors, most of them conduct researches and will be happy to take you in if they have space. Good Luck 👍.

Research experience is probably not as important as vet experience, it's just useful. I don't know if it'll put you over the bar for getting into vet school, but if you find you like research, all the professors in vet school are eager to put you to work!

I'm pretty sure that (in relation to getting into vet school) it does not have to be your own. I know many people, including myself, who jumped into graduate students' projects. I got a research job a few summers ago in the animal and diary science department with 2 PhD students. The project had been going on since December and I did it for a few months until it finished. I think adcoms just want to see that you have been exposed to and experienced the research side of veterinary medicine and can form a broad view of everything the field has to offer.

in some cases you can start out by helping some one else with their research, and as you get more comfortable in the lab/with your co-researchers or your 'advisor' that oversees the lab, then you may be able to suggest your own research project. There are lots of opportunities out there (especially if you are close to a vet school, they always have TONS going on). Jump on it if you really want to do research, but as stated before, getting vet tech experience might be more beneficial (but both is super awesome) and if you get published its a super big resume builder.

Good luck!:luck:

StillDreaming reminded me of something I forgot to put. Because of my involvement in the grad student's research, the faculty advisor offered me a chance to do my own mini-research project (which I ended up getting class credit for in a pre-req requirement! Although I think I forgot to put that on my app...oh well) Point being- research is a very good opportunity and definitely take any chance to participate! :luck:
