Research

research is not necessary for optometry school, but it will definitely look good for your application

Do you think it matters if the research isn't eye related?

There are a few things you should consider. First, are the opt schools you are interested in research-heavy schools (SCO is mostly clinical, not a whole lot of research is done here)? Also, are you interested in doing research after optometry school? If so, it may be beneficial to you to get some research experience. If not, and you don't plan on going to a research school, research isn't really necessary. Definitely don't waste your time doing research if you don't want to, just because you think you have to for your app. On the other hand, if you find a project that really interests you, go for it!

I dont think it would matter. I work in a lab right now and its not eye related. I think learning the skills and getting familiar with how it all works is more important. People change fields of research all the time. Some work on multiple projects. The great thing about research is you can catch up to almost any project by reading papers and getting a brief on what has been done and etc... You should do research if you are interested in it, or maybe to find out if you are interested. It has overall been a great experience for me.
