If one goes to a residency page and views the last 5-6 years and there is not one DO, and it is a mid-tier to lower tier program, does that imply an average DO applicant will be filtered out?

Specialty is emergency medicine

From what I've seen in EM, they tend to be really specific about the type of applicant... varying from program-to-program, of course.

In other words, go ahead and apply because you never know, but if they do not have any DOs in their recent history, then it is unlikely that they will start now.

ER is a pretty competitive specialty. If I were a DO applying or allo ER residencies, I would apply broadly and definitely to programs that have taken DO's, but by all means if you are an otherwise qualified applicant, don't let being a DO deter you from applying to some that don't seem to have any DO's. You never know...

Please remember that the rosters are only half the story. there have been years that we have ranked more females than males, yet matched more males. we have ranked DOs and yet matched MDs. Same with IMG's. you truly would need to look at who they interviewed, and who they ranked high enough to match. which is information you won't see posted!

That may very well happen sometimes, but I think it's good to make note of what kind of people seem to end up in the residency if you find yourself needing to make decisions about which interviews to accept or limited by time/money constraints. I found it disheartening when I interviewed at one program only to find out later that their new chairman was hoping to raise the "prestige" of the program by recruiting American MDs and not as many DOs/IMGs. Traveling for that interview was a considerably costly trip for me and I kind of felt like I had wasted my time.
