I was just curious whether anyone knew of someplace where applicant statistics to individual residency programs are listed...for example how many people applied to a given program, how many were interviewed, whether the program filled, lowest program rank position that matched to the program

I am just trying to get an idea of how competitive certain programs are

Also, I was wondering if anyone knew of any additional resources for residency program research besides FRIEDA and the program web pages

I am bored this summer and figure that you can never get too early of a start on this sort of stuff 🙂

Accplicants and interviews are usually on FRIEDA. Filled/unfilled is available at Scutwork.com under match results. Distance down rank list is unavailable unless the programs want to tell you themselves.

same question here. how can i find out how competitive a residency program is and at specific institutions? also, how do i find out about the lifestyles of certain specialists?

im thinking about ER, plastics, urology, heart surgery, family practice/internal med, etc.

Basically by word of mouth and average USMLE scores of those who matched (granted if you went to school in the US).

Of the ones you listed:

Lifestyle specialty: ER (others include derm, radiology), family practice (no ob)

Competitive specialty: ER, plastics, urology, cardiac surgery (fellowship, not residency)

Non-competitive: family practice, IM

The Ultimate Guide To Choosing a Medical Specialty

Ha, ha, this has to be like the fifth time I've plugged this book here on SDN. I swear I have nothing to do with the writing/publishing/promotion of this book, I just like it alot. I picked it up on the reccomendation of someone else here on SDN. It includes match data, compensation, lifestyle issues, an overview of the training, etc... for each specialty. It includes a section on which specialties mesh best with which personality types, an extensive write up on how the match works, tips for being competative for matching in each specialty... definately a worthy buy! 👍
I believe there are other similar books out there, I have no idea how they are, this is just the one I have.
Also, I'm glad I picked it up just before M1 to help get me started thinking about generally which specialties interest me and how best to take advantage of my 4 yrs of MS.

It's also brand new, so completely up to date.

Thanks for the info, celestron2000 👍

Matching data is available from the NRMP. Although this data does not include positions from SFMATCH which include neurology, neurosurgery, ophthalmology, otolaryngology (ENT), and the combine plastic surgery programs. Also urology has it's own matching program.

Apart form neurology, all the SFMATCH programs and urology are quite competitive.
