I'm still a pre-optometry student and I've been looking at some optometry schools to find out more about them, but I don't quite get how residency works - it's usually your last year at an optometry school and you can spend your time at various locations to find out what you want to do, right? And I think each school has different requirements for the last year, but what are the differences? And what are the "residency programs" at certain schools then, is it for people who already have their O.D. degree and want to specialize (and do all schools have all of the same programs - i'm interested in pediatrics and low vision care)? i'd appreciate any input to the many questions (sorry). thanks in advance! 😛

residency programs are to specialize in an area the year ofter graduation (you're already an OD)

the main specialties offered in residency are: contact lens, ocular pathology/disease, family practice, pediatrics/binocular vision , low vision, etc

your last year of OD school (fourth year) is done in externship where you go out to sites and work for a few semesters. Each OD school has different sites and you send varying amounts of time there. UHCO has 3 externships you have to do one in primary care, one in pathology, and one in=house rotation. I know other schools do more or less depending on curriculum. 🙂

hope this helps !

cpw,

do you have to do a peds, low vision or emergency rotation too?

We have a choice of peds and low vision or peds, emergency and primary care for one of our rotations.
