Was just curious if a general practice residency is a requirement (in any state) or if you can practice as a general dentist right out of dental school. And are you are a major disadvantage not having done one. Thanks

It's required for NY. Most other states will let you practice as long as you pass licensure. One advantage of doing a residency is you gain experience in an educational setting as opposed to a commercial one. So depending on where you do your residency, you could learn how to handle more medically compromised or otherwise difficult patients while another dentist watches over your should to make sure you don't kill the patient. I would say the majority of GPs don't do a residency, but if you're interested in something like hospital dentistry, it's a must.

It is NOT required in NY... I don't know where you got that info from. In NY, if you do a residency, however, you can get a license without taking the NERB.

say I do my dental education in one state, but I want to practice in another..

Is it easy to get licensure? What exactly is the procedure?

Go to school whereever.. then take the regional board exam for the state that you want to practice in. Once you pass, apply for a license in that state. Where you go to school has nothing to do with where you practice. If i went to dental school in Cali, and I wanted to practice in NJ, I would take the NERBs (Northeast regional board exam) and then apply for a license in NJ.

edit... going to school in the region you want to practice will make your life easier though when you take the regional board exam... Usually, your school will host the exam for that region, so you can take it in your own chair with your own patients. If you go to school in Cali and take the NERB in NJ, then you have to find patients in NJ or find one in cali and fly them out to NJ. Its a real pain in the ass, but people do it.
