Does anyone understand how the residency applications will be affected by the ACGME and AOA merger in the following regards:

From what I understand, if you apply to DO residencies, and MD, and are accepted to a DO res., you are dropped from your MD apps (DO match occurs a month before MD I believe).

that's how things are right now.
in a combined single match starting march 2015, if you don't match your 1st/2nd/... choice whether osteo-focused or allo-focused, you can always fall back to your nth choice whether osteo-focused or allo-focused.

That is the current system. From what I understasnd, since DO match occurs before the MD one, if you want to go for a MD residency, you must not apply to the DO one. If you don't get your MD residency, you scramble for your life and go for any open residency left whether it be DO or MD.

In the new system, you put all you want and hope for the best. A lot simpler.
