Hey gang...
How many apps should I put out there.. I'm an osteopathic student with avg boards scores, lots of community service/leadership, no research ( i hate the stuff) and applying to mostly allopathic programs. How many programs should I apply to? I want to be in a big city (chicago or eastward)...any specific program suggestions... thanks!

What type of program do you want? Big university program or smaller community based program? And how big of a city do you want? Good programs between Chicago and Boston in decent sized cities for average applicants include....Christ (chicago), Lutheran General (chicago), Rush (Chicago), Milwaukee, Indiana, Detroit, Columbus, St Chris (Phili). However, don't sell yourself short as well. If you have your eye on a more competitive program, give it a shot. Peds as a whole is still relatively non-competitive. The number of programs isnt quite as important as the variety of programs. I think 10-20 programs is more than adequate. 10-12 interviews is plenty. Good luck!

By the way, a lot of the midwest programs pay for your accomodations to come interview so it doesnt cost too much, especially if you can string a few interviews in a row. And they typically feed you the night before and the day of, so a lot of your meals are paid for as well. For example, I went to Chicago, Indianapolis, Columbus, and Cleveland over the course of a week and it really only cost me gas and a few meals along the way. I think I only paid like $1200-1500 in total application and interview expenses for applying to 15 programs and interviewing at 12. This sure beats ortho and radiology applicants from my school who paid like $15K-$20K.

thanks for that info it was helpful. what do you consider top tier programs? In addition, do you think the same programs which you just mentioned would also be available to a carib grad?

Question, so I'm applying to a few allopathic residencies for the categorical internships. Should I be applying to the internship positions or theh residency positions? And if I plan on practicing in Michingan do I also need to apply for an osteopathic internship year?
