How does this work? I know that to practice in PA, you need the rotating internship. Would you do that for PGY-1, and then apply to the residency program, starting as a PGY-2, at the first year of their residency program? Does that even make sense?

Also, can osteopathic students do surgery rotations at Temple?

Very few of the hospitals in philadelphia are not accepted by the AOA for providing an adequate internship year (check POMA's website for the list). You just need to get your PGY-1 year approved before you start it. It requires you to spend a certain amount of months in certain fields. This really isn't that hard for the majority of specialties. Surgery is probably the hardest field to get approval because you will not automatically spend time in the fields you need to. You can always apply for a PGY2 position during your internship year, go to a dually accredited program or apply for a hardship exemption (usually you have to show you applied for all the osteopathic positions in ana rea and didnt get it).

All hospitals in philadelphia take DOs in every field. You may have to wait till fourth year though.

Also you REALLY shouldn't be thinking about this at all. The situation is pretty much changing yearly.

I applied to allopathic programs in PA and I was not required to have an AOA internship completed. However, not having one would prevent me from moonlighting in my senior year of residency. Ultimately I matched somewhere else that didn't have the AOA requirement so I avoided the whole issue.

I do find it ridiculous that these five states have this requirement, and I mostly avoided applying to residencies in those states with one or two exceptions. Philly is hard to exclude for residency.

You can either do a purely osteopathic internship then apply to an ACGME program (and start again as either PGY1 OR PGY2 if they accept your OPGY1 year)

or you can go directly into an allopathic residency, and petition the AOA through resolution 42 to accept your PGY1 as AOA-equivalent.

Another option is attending a dually-accredited program (AOA and ACGME accredited)

As for surgery at Temple University Hospital, you can as a visiting student

When I was at PCOM, a lot of PCOM's rotation sites were also Temple's major affliates, including surgery sites such as Geisinger, St. Luke's Bethlehem, Lehigh Valley Hospital, Abington, Crozer-Chester, Conemaugh, etc.
