so when your residency program provides a book stipend, do they give you the entire amount in the beginning of the year or do they reimburse you as you provide them receipts?

Probably depends on the program.

For mine, we selected books at the bookstore and then told the program coordinator who went down to pay for them and put them in our mailbox for us (ie, no cash advance).

If we bought something elsewhere, we could submit a receipt for reimbursement.

As Winged Scapula posted above, it's program-dependent.

Here they buy a set of books and distribute them to the residents. No money for us!

Is it common for residency programs to ask their incoming residents for money to help supplement the "Educational Fund"?

Thanks for the reply. You're right. I just checked the e-mail I got about the education fund and it states that the money is for my ITE.....or should I also question why I'm paying for that?!

As you can tell, I'm a very cheap b*stard:laugh:

I"m still confused. Are you saying they are asking YOU to pay for your ITE? If so, I don't know how common that is...I never had to pay for mine.

That's right, I had to send a check to my program to pay for my ASA ITE. I know when I did my surg prelim at my last program I didn't have to pay for my ABSITE. However, my program does offer its residents an "education allowance" for conferences, seminars, review courses, or books. I'll have to ask and see if that includes exams.

We get 1 new book a year courtesy of my program, and then a set amount of credit through the GME office to purchase books from the bookstore every year.

I try to get the program to give me the big, expensive ones, and then purchase all the "little" ones myself in the bookstore so one book doesn't use up all my credit.
