Is it typical to not include the orientation meetings as part of the start date of the contract? and I would assume we would not be paid for these orientation days? My program is asking us to start orientation on June 16 and the official contract start date is on June 20. Do I have any room in negotiation of this contract?

some programs do pay you for orientation, but not include it in the contract - you should check with the Housestaff affairs office that sent you the info. otherwise, no...there is no way to negotiate the contract. orientation is required prior to your job, and i don't think any employer is under obligation to pay you for that training - though i could be wrong.

if you think about it, residency is just one big orientation to becoming a licensed physician😀

You should count your lucky stars that you only have to do a few days of orientation. I had to do TWO WEEKS! Of course I was not paid for this time. I wouldn't have minded except that most of the sessions were completely useless.😡

My orientation is 1 week. Would be nice if they pay.

Already finding out the fine details that they didn't mention at interview day. Vacation is 4 weeks, but one of those weeks is used for sick days, emergency leaves, etc. More surprises to come I'm sure.

I'm getting a little worried, I haven't heard anything from my program yet! I asked the coordinator when orientation would be, and she thinks that it will be the 26th and 27th. Well, I want to do some summer classes which end on the 27th!

Besides the uncertainty over orientation, I'm wondering about the organization of the program. The match was how long ago? And, didn't they realize they'd have new residents coming in? Hmmmm.

I had one orientation for my PGY1 year for which I got paid, another in my PGY2 year at a different hospital which I didn't. Guess which hospital I like better. Both had start dates that were after the orientation listed in the contract.

And by the way, you might not get paid until about three weeks after you start depending on how they process payroll.
