i know many of the residency dinners have a "casual" dress code, but typically, for guys, what have you all been wearing to these? Button down shirt/slacks, sportcoat, jeans....?

Why is "dinner" in quotes? Are you expecting that they are really planning something very non-dinner like?

I have been wearing "slacks" with a "button" down shirt. No "tie". Can't go wrong with that, looks "nice", not overly "formal". If "people" overdress you'll be in the "ballpark" of more conservative dress, if people underdress you'll still look comfortable.

i think he meant "dinners" as in... is this secretly a part of the interview which they just call a dinner in order to see how you act & behave when you are in a normal situation
