So I'm confused about DO residency. I'm interested in OBGYN or fetal medicine. I am applying to both MD and DO schools. The question is why do people say it is harder to specialize with a DO degree. Don't the DO's have their own residency programs. I looked on the website and some of the DO neurosurgery residency spots were not even filled. I'm really confused about this.

Is it common for a med student to take the COMLEX and USMLE? Could a student be successful taking the USMLE as a DO?

You need to do a lot more research on your own. You're basically asking someone to explain the entire process of residency applications as a DO. Use the search function. Better yet shadow a DO and ask him/her about their experiences. 95% of the responses you will get here will come from MD students or pre-meds who just repeat what they've heard, whether it be true or false.

Sometimes you do need to take both the COMLEX and USMLE. However a increasing amount of residency programs are accepting of the COMLEX. However taking the USMLE could improve your chances are many ACGME residencies.
Well they and many other residencies weren't filled. Apparently people this year weren't very interested in doing a residency for 7 years.

There was once a time on this site when people would answer someone's question, no matter how stupid it was.
