Residency/experience

Most people don't do a residency after optometry school.

A residency is usually better than a year of experience in clinical matters. Most of the time the cases are more difficult in nature and you have experienced docs to learn from.

IMO residency should be required for all.

I too believe a residency is important to an optometrist and should be required, however from what I have read, residencies are not being as... fought over I suppose you could say, as the other health care professions residencies are, unless I am completely wrong. Is there high competition for the more prestigious residencies? Aside from Bascom Palmer, what other residencies are considered prestigious, or at least highly noticable on a resume?

What makes you think Bascom Palmer is more "prestigious" than any other residency? If you want to go into pediatric optometry, doing a residency at Bascom Palmer isn't likely to help you much, but doing a Peds residency at any school probably will.

When I interviewed at IU, the head of clinics guy there said if you take a residency at Bascom Palmer, U.S. News ranked best eye hospital in the United States, you could basically "write your ticket" to any clinical or hospital position you wanted. I know this is a bit exaggerated, but I was wondering if anyone knew of other residency positions that held this much clout.

I do, however, understand your (EyeBaller's) post and it would very much make sense to take residency in a chosen specialty; which is technically what residencies should be about in the first place. But I'm sure, as in your example, there is a pediatric residency that the Peds O.D.s covet more than all the others, just as there would be in all the other specialties. But, back to my original post on the subject, there may not be any "coveted" residencies, and I was wondering if anyone knew about this.

I have to disagree with this line of thought. I would agree with the following "...if you want to be an ophthalmologist extender or surrogate ophthalmologist then Bascom Palmer works for you"...However, if you want to be counted as a partner in a generally medical (not surgical setting), then most optometry residencies in ophthalmologic settings only teach the optometry how to behave like an ophthalmologist but little about being the partner in a general medical setting in delivering eye care.

I would like to get some feedback on anyone who HAS DONE a residency or known someone because I am in the process of searching and there is soooo much out there. I wanted to get first hand experienced opinion on what they've gained or heard about some of the programs.

thanks appreciated!

bascom palmer is a good site for a residency... in general, my graduating class split up all over the country when doing their residencies, and everyone is doing well
