Residency for Canadians

Hi,

I'm not sure if this issue has been addressed before, but as a DO applicant for Fall 2014 entry, I couldn't help wondering if Canadian US-trained DO would find a residency spot in the U.S. without a problem.

If Canadian US-trained DO's can't find a residency in the States, is there a possibility of them doing a residency in Canada?

As long as you aren't picky, you will be okay in the US, you can not do AOA residencies if you want to return to canada so you must do ACGME MD residencies. You'll have a much better chance getting a US residency than Canada. Don't count on a Canadian residency unless you end up as an all star in med school. Too early to think about that though.

I would relate getting Canadian residency to getting into dermatologist in ACGME as a DO. (ok, maybe a little bit easier than that, but still very hard!)

Honestly, still a lot better than IMG. What kind of specialty you looking at?

Thanks, I've seen this before, and it says what I'll need to return to Canada/stay in the States, but I had no way to tell how difficult it would be.

Thanks, that's a relief! I just want to make sure after graduation I wouldn't end up in a HUGE debt with no residency because of my citizenship given that I don't marry during med school lol.

I sure hope IMG MD << US DO because it's sparked a lot of debate among my friends at school, and DO still seems to be the less popular choice than the IMG at least in my friend group. Well, I don't know for sure but I'm thinking pediatrics or psychiatry.

Obviously this is without data backing, but IMO, these 2 specialties should be good for us Canadians. Dermatologist on the other hand xD

Rightly so, it isn't black/white. For the average person, DO may be better. But for those odd cases, IMG may be better. Not starting a X vs Y debate though, so sticking to your question, primary care residencies in the US should be a guarantee, as long as you don't bomb med school.
