Hi all,
a couple of quick questions here.

So I always hear that IMGs are at a disadvantage to USMGs. From perspective of PDs, why's this the case?
Do they get more funding from the government if they take a USMG over a IMG (Assuming same USMLEs)?

If so, then do US-IMGs get the program more funding than FMGs? What about foreign students (Canadians) graduating from US medical schools? or What about Osteopathic Medical graduates?

Thanks a lot for any responses in advance.

It's not a funding issue. PD issues regarding IMGs:
(1) visa issues.
(2) inability to judge and compare credentials due to lack of familiarity. US med schools may not necessarily be the best, but at least thanks to the LCME they crank out a very standardized and equivalent product.
(3) bad track record of some prior IMGs in terms of integrating into the US hospital system and patient culture.
(4) language issues.
(5) visa issues.
(6) visa issues.

Totally agree with the above. To be clear, the funding for all residents is the same regardless of what school you went to, or whether you need a visa.

super, got it thanks 🙂

So just to be excessively clear 😛, a Canadian student applying from an US-MD school would have no advantage over applying from a LCME accredited Canadian-MD school?

And also for ACGME residencies, there's thus little reason for PDs to prefer DO grads to Caribean-MD grads like St.George?

*i.e. being a USMG is not in itself advantageous for getting a US residency.

I believe it is. IMGs/DOs are held to a higher standard at acgme programs. The ones who do end up matching often have stellar credentials and managed to outperform US MD grads.

No, being a US MD grad is in and of itself an advantage in residency matching.

What L2D and aPD said is that it's not a funding issue...anyone who qualifies and matches in a residency program will get the funding available for that spot, regardless of where they were born and where they went to med school.
