Excuse my ignorance, I?m just a premed who won?t start med school until august. But I wanted to get an idea of how long certain residencies were. Specifically specialties like rads, path, EM, gas, and radiation oncology. I?ve been reading the boards and sometimes it appears EM, and gas is 3 years and sometimes 4 years, while rads appears to be 4 years, but a prelim year is required on top of that making rads a total of 5. Can someone explain the total amounts of years are (including trans/prelim years) for the specialties I?ve named, thanks.

Radiology: 1 year transitional/prelim + 4 years rad = 5years

Anesthesia: 1 year trans/prelim + 3 years anes = 4 years

EM: Varied, most are now 3 years but some still 4 years and some require a prelim / transitional year.

Rad Onc: 1 year trans/prelim + 3 or 4 years. I'm not sure about that one.

Path: NO trans/prelim. 4 years path.

You didn't inquire about CT Surg, but I thought I'd mention something interesting I've heard about it from a Perinatologist I worked under once. Supposedly, Duke's CT Surg residency is so badass that it has no set length... you're done when the the senior faculty members feel you're ready... may it be 6, 7, 10, or more years 😡 ! Pretty good deal huh?

😛

Deuce,

Check out www.ama-assn.org and follow the links to FRIEDA. It is the American Medical Association website. FRIEDA is a database of residency programs in all specialties. There you can find information about residency lengths as well as links so that you can read about the structure of different programs.

Good luck.

I dont know about Duke specifically, but my understanding is that CT surg is a fellowship after Gen Surg. Most often it is 5 yrs of GS (some programs add 1-2 yrs of research on top of that) and then an additional 2-3 yrs of CT fellowship. This makes it at least 7yrs and potentially 10 years (dependent on research).

I also know from GS wannabes on the interview trail that a few of the elite programs are introducing fast-track paths for fellowships including CT, i.e., 4 yrs of GS then 2-3 years of CT fellowship.

afmsboy- i pm'd you!
