MS1 here. Not sure what I want to go into yet. But I really want to do residency in California. I've been there many times and would like to live there when I'm older.

My question is are residency programs in CA like med schools in CA, as in do they prefer CA residents? Is it harder for someone at an out of state med school to get accepted into a CA residency?

I tried searching the forums but couldn't find an answer.

Residencies want to recruit the best residents they can. Work your hardest to get a competitive application, make a compelling case for why you're a good fit for their program, and hope for the best. There's nothing else you can do. For the most part, the people in my class who wanted to go to California matched to California.

There are many competitive programs in California, but also many programs that are not very competitive, especially in less competitive specialties. If you end up wanting to dermatology, you will need to really decide what is more important to you, specialty or location. Doing something as a profession that you don't enjoy could lead to a lot of misgivings and professional dissatisfaction; it's better to be a happy and fulfilled dermatologist (if that's what you want to do) in South Dakota than a disappointed pediatrician (if that's your second choice) in California.

What is stopping you from pursuing your specialty of choice and then moving to California afterwards?

CA is tough to match at if you have no connection, but if you're shooting for primary care and you're from a U.S. MD school then it should be fine.

Should do an away in cali if you want to match there. It is noticeably harder to match in a region outside your home region without ties
