I am currently a North Carolina resident applying for the 2008 cycle. Tuition is really important to me when thinking about my top choice dental schools. Clearly, UNC has a great school and great in-state tuition, but I have also been looking a lot at VCU and Maryland. I know that VCU has a policy where you must live there for 1 year and you will have a good chance at residency; however, Maryland has a policy where you must prove that you did not move to MD because of your education before they will grant you residency.

Has anyone here successfully become a Maryland Resident after a year at the University of Maryland without a spouce working at the school?

doubtful. MD is one of the strictest states about declaring residency for tuition purposes.

i start UMD this fall, and i plan to register my car & get voter registration in MD. also, i plan on getting a part-time job so i can pay MD taxes, and i may even buy a place second year of school to help prove my commitment to the state. in addition to that, i will probably have to come up with some elaborate story about how i was planning on moving to MD before being accepted to UMD. even then, the chance i will be classified as a resident is slim 🙄

jb!🙂

congrats on getting accepted to maryland JB! im glad to see everything worked out for you.

i dont think VCU allows you to switch residency status since you are moving there for educational purposes, they made that pretty clear to us during the interview day.

i successfully got in-state status at MD but only because my parents moved there a couple years back when my dad got transferred to work there and he is a federal employee so it made for a good excuse for me. good luck and as you mentioned, if your spouse works for the u of md system you get instate tuition status.... so technically since you were hoping to get instate after a year, just give yourself a year to get married to someone willing to work for the school 😀

Thanks for the comments! My other question would be if VCU or Maryland have programs where you work in the state for x number of years and get the tuition loans paid off.

Yes, VCU has a program where if you work in an underserved area then they will pay for your tuition.

maryland has a program for instate people that see medicaid patients or something like that, I dont think they pay a ton, but its something worth looking in to

I know in Virginia it is very very difficult to claim residency after being accepted as an out of state student

Congrats on your acceptance at UMD. Did you get a chance meet Dr. Morgan? She's the director of admission and recruiting (my aunt as well). I will applying next cycle.

UMD just spent 2.8 million on the new dental school. I was there a few weeks ago and the labs and simulation rooms are HOT!!! Enjoy!
