hello,
i went to high school in new jersey and got accepted to the university of Michigan. since they have ridiculously high out of state tuition, i was hoping that i would count as an in state after a year or two.
when i called them up, their requirements does not really focus on your presence, studies, ownership of a house, or job.... but where your parents live. Since my parents are not citizens or residents... i can never be a in state even if i live 30 years in michigan. is this some cruel way of making money. does anybody have any idea how i can escape this catch 22.

thanks

umm, it means that you're not a michigan resident and you have to pay OOS tuition... and unless you actually would want to stay here after graduation (which if you're like 75% of med students in the state, you dont) you're not going to get a drop of sympathy.

How much is OOS tuition? MSU is freakin ridiculous too! Must be a Michigan thing.

I don't think there is any way around that rule, sorry to say. They assume as a grad student that some may purchase a condo/townhouse/or house so that is not going to make you a resident. It may just be a ploy for them to keep their money, but unfortunately that is the way it is.

After you graduate, if you stay in Michigan you can establish residency...you just can't do it while in college. You are not tied to your parents residency for "30 years." Pretty simple concept...
