Hi everyone, I just started my first year at DMU and am wondering about residencies. I was looking on CRIP, and was wondering if there are actually enough residencies for all of the grads each year from all of the schools (sorry, I'm sure this had been asked/answered elsewhere). Also, which residencies are the hardest or most prestigious to get into? Here the grades are just a percentage, but the residency sites list minimum GPA on a 4.0 scale. How are the percentages transferred to the scale? Any information would be greatly appreciated. I obviously know very little about them... Thanks!!!

I am the first one to say that you need to do a lot of research on residencies early on... but that is more in mid-to-late 2nd year. For now, just try to do the best you can in classes, learn the anatomy, etc.

As for residencies, this thread is fantastic info and includes a list of good residencies which I threw together not real long ago. I'd still stand by it... as I say in the post, I'm sure some excellent programs were not mentioned due to being underrated ones or ones in parts of the country I wasn't too interested in...

The fact that you are going to DMU will help a lot, but you still need to work hard your first year and strive to be in the top 25% of your class. Your grades will get you an externship, but what you do during your externship will get you a program. Good luck and enjoy your time in Des Moines. It goes by quick.
