I was planning on rotating in my top two choice residencies (audition rotations) during the Nov - Dec and Dec-Jan blocks, because this is close to the match and I will be fresh in their minds. An opportune time to do it right? It suddenly occured to me that I will be going to interview at several other programs during that same two months. How does this work? Are programs typically ok with letting you leave to do this? Is it a bad idea for me to be expecting to go interview during a time when I am at my audition rotations? Thanks for the info...

bad idea. bad timing.
I am sure that others might agree.

Definitely... maybe you can reschedule the late Dec - Jan rotation for late Jan- Feb and leave the late Dec - Jan open for rotations?

Thanks for the response guys. So when do most people do their "audition" rotations and how many do most people get to do?

usually do away rotations early (july-oct). definitely a bad idea to take any days off during these rotations...

Good rotations for scheduling interviews are non-audition elective rotations that you are just doing for fun/education while in your 4th year. For example, I have been on my radiology rotation this past month, and it has allowed me to attend two residency interviews and one national conference. Just check with the preceptor(s) you will be working with prior to starting (or scheduling) the rotation. Most of them are very understanding of your situation as a 4th year, and many are very sympathetic to the fact that you will be working your butt off the next year as an intern...most of them.

Doesn't your school give you interview periods?
In 4th year, we get two 4-wk blocks for interviewing and/or vacation. If still not enough, we try to schedule lighter rotations during interview season, like radiology, etc.
