I was planning on rotating in my top two choice residencies (audition rotations) during the Nov - Dec and Dec-Jan blocks, because this is close to the match and I will be fresh in their minds. An opportune time to do it right? It suddenly occured to me that I will be going to interview at several other programs during that same two months. How does this work? Are programs typically ok with letting you leave to do this? Is it a bad idea for me to be expecting to go interview during a time when I am at my audition rotations? Thanks for the info...

Yes it's not ideal in my opinion. Dec/Jan are the prime interviewing season months and many times programs will only have a few dates from you to choose from which may not mesh with your rotation days. Programs may not stop you from leaving, but it may make them with a funny feeling, especially if you miss a lot of days. Obviously they know you are interviewing at more than one place, but they don't need to be overtly reminded of it. It's already so hard to get face time with attendings, leaving just reduces that impression even more.

Plus, with rotations so late you won't get letters in on time for eras for your other programs.

I suggest taking 1 or 2 months completely off for interviewing or you could use it to study for the boards, do research, etc.
