I'm told that as far as specialties go, OB/GYN is not particularly difficult to match into. However, when I check the programs in my area (Cleveland, which is by no means a high interest area), most programs interview 60-80 people to fill 5-7 spots. That strikes me as extremely competitive. WHat gives here? Do these numbers give a false impression of the competitiveness of these programs?

Well, if Cleveland interviews 60, and ranks them 1-60, but numbers 1-53 want to go somewhere else, then numbers 54-60 are the ones that end up matching. So those numbers really don't mean much.

I believe most programs interview about 10 applicants for each spot. I'm sure the really competitive/highly coveted applicants interview at the same top programs and so those programs probably don't always get their top choices b/c they have to compete with each other. Plus, I saw a lot of the same people on the interview trail at different programs.
