Hey guys,

I am debating whether or not do a residency or just look for a job. I would prefer to just start working, but I've heard that most practices won't accept someone fresh out of dental school. Is that true? Is there anyone out there who has been successful in finding a job without a residency? Please share your experience!

Also, if I want to do a specialty in the future or look for a better paid job, would they look more favorably upon residency OR few years working as a regular dentist?

Thanks a lot!

Quite the contrary...I think many professors would have you believe that you need a residancy to get a job, but with there being such a dental shortage nation wide there are many opportunities for jobs without residencies, and all of these pay so much better too! You might not get an associateship in the high-end all cosmetic million dollar practice right out of school, but many General dentists are looking for associates, community health centers all over need dentists, and there are always the various dental clinics.
If you feel you are not ready to jump right out of school into a practice, or you just want to learn more, and you dont need the money..thats what the residencies are for.
