Hi Everyone,

Yesterday I found out that I have been accepted into dental school. I know it's extremely early to talk about residency programs and specialties, but I want to be ahead of the game when I start school!

For those of you completing a residency program (specifically an OMFS residency), I have a few quick questions. I have done some research online, but I figure it would be better to hear from people actually participating.

1. Realistically, what are the most important qualifications (grades, rank, LOR, research, etc.) a candidate must have in order to be placed?

2. What is the scope of practice for an OMFS and what what procedures do the majority spend their time performing in actual practice?

3. In regards to scope of practice, is there any benefit of the dual degree opposed to the DDS/ OMFS certification?

4. How common are post-residency externships/ fellowships?

5. How difficult is it to complete a residency program while starting a family?

Thank you all for any insight

1. It really depends but the general consensus is class rank and CBSE scores are really important. Everything else helps but if you don't have the first two then the rest doesn't matter.

2. Bread and butter is taking out wisdom teeth and placing implants. All OMFS should try and do full scope but sometimes that is not the case.

3. There is no difference in scope between dual degree and single degree.

4. I have no idea the exact number, but very few proportion of OMFS residents continue on to do a fellowship. Most fellowships prefer 6 year guys. Except maybe craniofacial.

5. It is difficult but doable, plenty of residents have started families during residency. The most important part is whether your spouse is on board.

Lastly, read the forums and look up some of this information on your own. A lot of these questions have been answered in detail in previous posts. If you truly like OMFS you'll find yourself scouring the forums for every bit of information. Good luck and congratulations on getting into dental school
