Hey everyone,

I was just wondering if anyone has any knowledge on how important the school you go to is to getting in residency post graduation? what do these residency programs really look for in applicants, or where i can find more information on this

My understanding is that which school you go to has little to no effect, other than I've heard some schools prefer not to take their own students for internships/residencies (although I'm not sure how true that is). Any AVMA-accredited school will set you up well for an internship or residency, although obviously if your school doesn't have a specialist in the field you're wanting to go into, you'll have to do a bit more legwork to make connections. I've been told the main things looked at are your GPA, class rank, experiences and letters of recommendation.

Do you think that they would prefer to take students who went to US schools?

It doesnt matter really where you go to school; however you usually have to complete a 1 year internship before you can begin a 3 year residency to specialize. Match day near the end of year 4 will help you find places you qualify for, but you are competing with the other 3,000+ students graduating that year

1. Not all residencies require internships (though most do).
2. Not all graduating vet students will want to pursue higher education, so the competition is a bit more manageable than that.

I think being in the US makes it easier to visit possible programs, which is important, but any AVMA accredited school (US or outside US) will be competitive for a residency program (or internship).

If you are already a US/Canada citizen, as long as the school you go to is accredited it shouldn't matter. Some internships (and residencies, I imagine) only accept US/Canada citizens, though, if that applies to you.
