I've looked on the ABP and ACGME websites and can't find the answer to my question. Our program, I guess like all the others, requires 1 month of forensics. Here's the thing- the ME at our "affiliated" office is crazy. When we ask if we can do our ME rotation at another office (in nearby cities, etc.), we are told this is "not allowed". Why can't we do this? If the other ME office is affiliated with a medical school and an accredited path residency why can't this count?

I dunno, maybe it is a requirement to do that one month locally for acgme requirements. They shouldn't be able to stop you from doing additional electives though.

Hi:

I do not believe that the there is a requirement by either the ABP or ACGME to "stay local" for an ME rotation. Is the local ME on staff at your program's hospital? It may be the case that your department is paying him to teach forensics to the residents, and the "not allowed to rotate elsewhere" may have more to do with that.

It is indeed allowed by the ABP, but the rules for your residency program may vary. I did my rotation at a county ME office hours away from my residency program, in fact I moved to do it because I couldnt commute that far.

Whoever told you it was not allowed is not speaking for the ABP/ACGME as far as I know.
