Hi,

I have some questions regarding the program size of residency programs I saw on FREIDA:

Total program size
Year Positions
1 11
2 4
3 4
4 4
5 5

How come in the second year there are only 4 positions? Does that mean that out of 11 doctors that were in the first year 7 of them will be fired?
Maybe these are the positions that will be added to the number of doctors that will come from the first year.

thank you

Those 7 are probably preliminary positions. They either have other advanced positions already lined up (like radiology, dermatology, anesthesiology, etc.), or this will be a temporary position while they try to apply for something more permanent.

OK, but how come in the last year there are more positions (5) than in the 4th year (4) ?

Also, as far as I know preliminary positions are only for the first and second year. Pls see the program size below:

Year Positions
1 16
2 8
3 8
4 7
5 7

As you see, in the 4th and 5th years there are less positions than in the 3rd year.

Depends on the program but my best guess is that those represent Integrated Residents (ie, a PRS resident who does their first 3 years in the GS department and the last two in PRS).

In your other example, it could be that the program either had an extra resident (say in a program where someone came out of the lab) or they downsized to only 4 categoricals per year, but the final year resident was "left over" from the larger year contingent.

Is it possible these residency programs to be designed as pyramid programs?

All of the 16 positions to be categorical positions and the PD to fire them in order to meet the pyramid design?

No it is not possible. If these are ACGME programs, pyramidal residencies are not allowed and have not been for over a decade.

If you wish to provide a link to the programs you are speaking of, perhaps we can figure out the situation for you.

This is a very common pattern for a program that has prelims in year 1, and a couple of years ago applied to have their program expanded by one sEat, from 7 to 8
