I'm looking to do clerkships in NY & NJ for potential residencies. Here is the list I've compiled. I do not want a 4 year residency, so I've only selected 3 year programs.

Hoboken University Medical Center
UMDNJ

NY Methodist Hospital (Brooklyn)
Kingsbrook Jewish Medical Center (Brooklyn)
Forest Hills Hospital

I'm just wondering if anyone has any info on these programs. I've checked CASPR/CRIP but I'm just wondering if I will still get good training in these places. What is the relationship with Orthopods since we will mainly be doing ankle/rearfoot surgery with them. Any info is much appreciated!

UMDNJ is generally regarded as a solid program... good trauma exp and pretty academic. You will meet some BIG egos at some of the east coast (Phila, Bost, NY, etc) programs tho.

I'm not sure who Feli is referring to, but I will hope that his comments are based on his experience and not on hearsay/reputation. Unfortunately, in many instances I will agree that there are many docs who develop very large egos when residency programs obtain prestige.

IF you have interest in the Presby program in Philly, I can assure you that Dr. Michael Downey is NOT one of those doctors. I am not making any comments about the Presby program, since some feel the program is very strong and others aren't so impressed by the program. There are some very aggressive attendings at the program with big egos, but Dr. Downey is an excellent surgeon, excellent teacher AND a great person.

I don't know a lot about the other Philly programs but do know at least one NY program director who has an ego beyond belief. I believe Dr. George Wallace runs the UMDNJ program and he has an excellent reputation and flies under the radar, keeping a low profile and I've never heard of any complaints about his ego.
