Hey everyone
I am trying to gather info on where med students turn to when looking for info on programs. hopefully this will lead to a more rapid and collective way to obtain information about residency programs.
thanks

tampa, fl

btw, "Word of Mouth" (residents'/students' rumors) should be different than "Faculty Mentor" (presumably more educated about the schools and programs)

Really depends. A soon to be intern who just finished applying is going to have more up to date info about program than many of their faculty mentors. Especially ones that are geographically far away (if the student applied to that area).

To the OP: I used Frieda and EMRA to find my initial list of programs based on location and length of training. Then I used individual websites to further narrow it down and prep for interviews. I just assumed the aggregate websites were probably out of date.

that's the problem, either sites are way out of date or it was hard for students to contact the staff for questions. at least that was the feedback I got from interviewing students last yr. so I figured if I knew where people are looking, then I can help implement a change

I'm in the process of looking at EM programs and the residency catalog on the SAEM website is pretty amazing for some hard, organized facts.

like anything else, it's not always accurate and depending on how you interpret the data will skew your thoughts. as always use it as a screening tool and take it all with a grain of salt.
although "weather/location" is a great screening tool too

Hahah yes, weather has been a pretty predominant screening tool for me, particularly as my better half can't stand the cold or darkness. She prefers LA or San Diego-esque weather.

Yeah I did notice some odd numbers while perusing the SAEM website but I didn't really particularly acknowledge them. Thanks for pointing that out cold, I'll take that data with a grain of salt now.

I hear ya, I am from san diego and the weather can't be beat but cost of living is high and it turned into a 4 yr program. that's why I stayed in FL, same as sd but more humidity 🙁 but a 3 yr program 👍
