Hey everyone,

Does anyone know if/which residency programs try to help reimburse moving expenses? I already matched, but I'm just curious about which programs do this as my credit card bill grows larger.

Not mine, unfortunately. I seem to recall from my interview that the University of New Mexico gave like 2000-5000 for moving expenses, but I don't recall. Sounds nice right about now!

The University of CA programs do (It's a GME benefit, not an anesthesiology dept benefit). They also pay for step 3 and the CA license. This is, sadly, true only for residents, not fellows.

I thought moving expenses are tax deductible?

We had a talk from an accountant that told us that moving for residency isn't tax deductible. Apparently you must be moving from one full time job to another and not from school to a job. Kinda sucks.

hm...guess all my receipts are useless now.

Are the moving expenses tax deductible from residency to fellowship since it's sort of a full time job?

Are you sure this is true? Publication 521 from the IRS, which addresses Moving Expenses, says you can deduct moving expenses even if this is your first full-time job. From the article's bit about the "distance test":

First job or return to full-time work. If you go to work full time for the first time, your place of work must be at least 50 miles from your former home to meet the distance test.

You can find the whole article here:

Yeah but is residency a job? Or is it education or training? I don't know the answer but I suspect that the expenses are not deductible. People take deductions all the time that they aren't supposed to (check the pain forum😀). Best bet is to check with an accountant.
