I am a 3rd year student looking at going into PM&R and was hoping to find some residency reviews. I used the interview trail back as far as it goes, but these are mostly snippets from a few days someone spent at the program, and its hard to sift through because there is no way to filter it by program. I also used scutwork, but most the reviews for the schools I'm looking at are more than 5 yrs old.

Is there a better way to find info; maybe something like scutwork that has more recent reviews? The program websites often only give generic stuff like we provide a well rounded education....

Thanks

there are threads in this forum where people have made many comments over the years. i would start w/ the sticky on the interview trail

Not really. AFAIK there is no centralized, comprehensive, post-interview, residency review database other than scutwork. And scutwork is essentially obsolete, having been neglected for years now. You can try searching this entire forum (not just the interview trail) using individual programs as your keywords, and read respective residents’ comments about them. As oreos said, start w/ the Interview sticky and go from there.

The usefulness of anonymous reviews will depend on what information you’re trying to acquire: resident satisfaction, job/fellowship placement stats, procedure exposure (hands on or off), proportion of bedside teaching vs formal didactics, quality of teaching, degree of scut, patient demographics, QOL inside/outside of the hospital, cost of living, etc. People are usually looking for a mix of objective and subjective criteria. It's the subjective parts of the review that gets people in trouble. Because these online reviews are anonymous and small in sample size, there's no practical way to assess the reliability of the reviewer or the review. You do need to check things out for yourself.

No matter where you get your information I think you need to be clear about the source of where it is coming from. If you have specific programs in mind I think it would be best to email the chief residents at the programs and ask your questions. Likely they will be biased to the particular program they are in but they should give you a good deal of insight and info especially if you have specific questions. PMR in general is a friendly lot and the residents in my experience are more than willing to provide info like this to med students.

Probably the best bet though is to do a rotation at a site(s) that you are interested in. This will give you a much better idea of how well you might fit in at a particular program. I personally found it hard to judge programs on paper, and found it much better to actually talk with the people involved with the program. As you go along you will find that who you are working with can make all the difference in how happy you are. Some programs that are great on paper might not be a great fit for you personally, and other programs that are good but not top tier may put you in a position to excel. 2 cents finished:yawn:
