Is there a good website where residents and med students have put up reviews of their ENT programs? Scutwork has some very old reviews and I'm not sure they are reflective of the programs anymore.

Not really. Word of mouth is probably the best you get for ENT. Wouldn't trust much if anything on otomatch, seems like a lot of axes being ground around there.

ENT is a small field with small departments. Departments can change dramatically with only a couple faculty leaving or coming in. The program your chief resident interviewed at can be quite different from the program today. I found the PGY1-PGY3s particularly helpful when it comes time to pick places to apply.

Also sit down with your home chair and/or PD. They can let you know programs they respect, and programs where their letters may pull more weight.

All in all I think there's very few (if any) programs in otolaryngology where you don't get great training. I was blown away with the quality of places on the interview trail, and my final list rank was very difficult as a result. The field as a whole is quite homogeneous I think due to the high quality of applicant and self-selecting personalities. I think it ultimately is more about personality fit within a specific program, which isn't something you're going to find online.

Agree completely with Zagdoc's post. There usually are a few "problem" programs with multiple faculty leaving or other obvious issues but they are easy to figure out. The other 95+% of programs will give you great training.

I had a little luck on otomatch.com. One place to look is on the forum for last year's cycle. Look at the threads for rank lists. Posters would put their impressions of the program and pros/cons when they posted their rank list. The reviews are pretty limited and one-sided, but it gives you somewhere to start.

Agreed.

There are no good forums out there that discuss residency programs from the student/resident perspective.

If you go to otomatch.com, I think you'll largely be disappointed with the information there.

Unfortunately, the only way is to either go there yourself or speak to people you know and trust who have no stake in the issue.

Never judge a book by its cover.
