Hello,

I am a first year Canadian international medical student studying in Ireland. I know all about the licensing exams and I don't need advice or information on Canadian/American residency options. However, I have a question about the salary bump from residency to attending.

Once I complete a residency, does your salary jump from about $65,000 to the attending salary of, let's say, about $200,000? If it doesn't jump in one year, how long does it take to start making that kind of money?

I am not in medicine for the money but it would just be nice to know.

The length of time it takes to get to an average attending salary range is going to depend on a number of factors: geographic location, hours worked, payor mix, employment environment and contract specifics.

But the short answer to your question is, yes. Once you move from training to attending, your salary will do something between double (going from a well paying peds residency to an average academic peds attending gig) to octuple (PP derm).

You might be in a field where fellowships are necessary which will be closer to a residents salary. Residency can by 3-7 years. Not all residencies pay $65k, and not all jobs pay $200k. And you'll probably have to service debt once you are an attending. So it might not be the case that your salary triples in 3 years. But yes when you finish training (whatever that may be in your specialty) you can look for a real job.
