Residency Switch! can it happen?

Hey:

What if you got the residency you want, but you arent sure the place your going is the rite place for you. Is it possible to transfer after 1st year? How do you find open spots for second year? How do you apply? When?

im just curious if anyone has any experience or knowledge that they can give me about transferring residencies.................particularly staying in the same field.

It can be done. You often will need a letter from the first program director- so don't make them too mad, and have a good reason for transfering. You can find open positions on the specialty's web site.

A few years ago someone in our residency program showed up but was seriously missing her fiance. A few months later they heard that a someone had dropped out of the program where their fiance was training. She went to our PD explained the situation, got his blessing, and then called the PD at the other program. She actually switched half way through her first year.
