Hey,

Could anyone tell me if waiving right to view letters of recommendation that we send to ERAS would be of additional advantage compared to open letters?

Thank you

Conventional wisdom has it that by waiving the rights to see your letters they are presumed to be more authentic, warts and all, as it were.

Is it a significant difference? Probably not, but why would you want to risk it - if there's any doubt that your letter writer would supply you with one supporting your candidacy, I'd choose another writer. My school had a policy of informing students that one of their letters was less than supportive when it came to the student affairs office for processing. Perhaps yours has the same?

call up or visit your letter writer, and ask specifically if he/she can write a solid letter on your behalf. get it out in the open. its not worth worrying about. everyone, your profs included, have been in your boat. you have to understand that there is a lot of nepotism in medicine. your mentors want to see you succeed and carry forth the good name of your institution into your new program. be confident that your letters will be good. Trust, but Verify. Good advise for the rest of your medical career.
