Hi Guys,

I'm applying to anesthesiology programs this fall, and would appreciate any insight into the West Coast programs. Websites are great, but personal feedback from applicants and residents can be very useful. Thanks!

The obvious is UCSF

If you are truly a pre-med as your data shows, you should bow out of responding to these questions. Having people with no knowledge of the subject weighing in on topics only confuses the issue.
How about we wait for the people who have some insight about the west coast programs.
I am not saying that UCSF is not a quality program( I have heard that it is), I am just saying that, as a premed student, you would have no idea how to evaluate what makes an anesthesiology program high quality other than name recognition.

If you have simply mislabeled your status, then disregard my post.🙂

off the top of my head:

UCLA
UCSD
Stanford
UCSF
OHSU
UW
Virginia Mason

i think it depends on what you're looking for in a program.

this is based on what i heard around the interview circuit last year...

UCSF, Washington, and UCLA would be considered more hardcore academic programs with larger classes where you may work a lot and blend in with the crowd

Virginia Mason, Oregon, and UCSD seemed to be a little more laid back, offered relatively smaller classes, and had a more intimate feel from what i've heard.

Stanford is another strong program but not sure exactly where they fall...

My impression is that you will be well-trained at any program on the West Coast except Harbor-UCLA.

"Top" is hard to define. If you want to go West Coast, apply to all of them and see for yourself what they have to offer.

I agree with this list!

A few friends applying to anesthesia asked me this same question. My advice is that you have to interview at each of the programs and decide for yourself. A program has to fit the applicant- that is the most important consideration.

I think this list is a great start. You will be trained well, and have no problems finding jobs after training at any of the mentioned programs.

It's important to highlight that all of the programs mentioned are university-based, except for Virginia Mason. During my interviews at the programs listed above, I heard nothing but excellent remarks about VM from my interviewers. VM is a smaller program a strong reputation in anesthesia, and is known for excellent teaching, great attendings, and an outstanding environment.

BOTTOM LINE: Apply to all of the programs mentioned above, and I would highly recommend interviewing at Virginia Mason!

...apply to all of them. They are overly competitive due to location, climate and scarcity. There're like 10 or so programs in CA, OR and WA. If you think you are highly competitive you can just be selective in the LA area--UCLA is one of the best. There are the academic powerhouses: SF, UCLA, UW, Stanford. On the other hand, UCSD residents love it, and everyone who visited VM and Oregon love them.
