hello guys,

i am a first year resident at LIJ in psychiatry, and i am strongly considering transfering back home to florida to finish up my training. i was wondering if there was anyone that could share some advice about transfering, or if they think it's to late in my intern year to do it?

thanks

Short answer is: yes, it is probably too late, especially for programs that fill PGYII spots through the Match; but my answer should be modified by: it depends on the institution and the program director. If you know the PD at your home institution, and they are familiar with your application, and they like you, and they have openings for PGYII applicants, then it may be an easy thing to do at this late point. For example, one of my co-residents' wives decided fairly recently (<1 month ago) that she wanted to switch into psychiatry after practicing in another specialty for several years. After she made the decision, her husband talked to our PD, and she interviewed for a PGYII spot just last week. But this case report (N=1) is a very specific example in a very specific type of situation and potentially not very generalizable.

There have been several threads on transferring programs -- please see this recent one, for example. You may still have unanswered questions after doing a thorough search of the forums, however, so if you do feel free to ask further questions.

Cheers

florida for some odd reason has only 3 psych programs. (boston by itself has almost triple the number.) so florida maybe difficult. u may want to try the neighboring states. also some programs have extra spots in pgy-2 (usc, etc.) check out the apa clearinghouse and u can email every program. since long island is not exactly exciting, try some of the nyc or cali programs.
