I'm sure this issue has been addressed in the past, so I apologize for asking again. But I did look through some of the old posts, and didn't really see the answer I was looking for, so I hope you'll bear with me...🙂

I'm in what I would consider a very, very weak residency program, although I am a very strong candidate with exceptional scores on USMLEs, in-training exams, etc. I have been very unhappy for some time, but I have stuck with things with the hope that my program would make changes. Unfortunately this has not happened, and things continue to get worse. I have explored the opportunities to transfer to other programs, but for various reasons, the few publicly posted openings are not possible for me. So my question is: can I contact programs directly expressing a desire to transfer? Do programs have additional available spots that aren't necessarily posted to the public?

Just out of curiosity why are you in such a weak program if you're such a stellar applicant?

I don't see why you can't cold call programs if you wish. Sometimes there are spots that haven't opened to the public yet.
