I've heard that many residency programs want you to do a rotation in their program. Or in order to have a strong chance for an interivew/residency position, you must do a rotation at that location. Is this true? Our school only allows us to do 3 rotations in any specific field. Therefore, I will obviously be applying to hospitals where I have not rotated. Do you know of some hospitals that will accept students into their residency program with only an interview?

I would say that most new residents are accepted to programs with only an interview. Pick your 3 choices wisely but don't think they will be your only options.

As the official spokesman of the 'Away Rotations Are A Waste Of Time Club', which, at this time has a total of one member, I'd say only do an away rotation at a place that is very convinient (and cheap) for you and somewhere you probably will really want to go. If, however, you are deciding between an anesthesiology away rotation and a rotation that is likely to be fun or something that you'll likely never do again, I would go for the later. Away rotations, in my unsupported oppinion, don't make a bit of difference to matching unless you're a very borderline candidate...and even then I still think the obligatory interviews you get are unlikely to yield much. I'll even go further by saying that if you are seriously considering doing more than three away rotations in anesthesia (in addition to your home rotation), you're nuts...you'll be putting people to sleep for the rest of your life.

Also to answer your question: Do you know of some hospitals that will accept students into their residency program with only an interview?

The answer is yes, most certainly all of them.

I would like to join your club and actually would like to form a subcommittee....people who blew their chances of matching at their number one choice because all they can do is intubate esophaguses (sp?). I personally am in that club on day 2 of my rotation. I'm having a great time though!

At least we know there would be good music at the annual picnic party 🙂

spoken like someone who either never saw my band play or was just drunk enough to enjoy it!

It will only help you get an interview if you wouldn't have in the first place. But it doesn't mean you will match. And the occasional candidate won't get an interview because he rotated at the program and did a poor job. Most residents match at programs where they didn't do a rotation. Almost no one at my former residency did rotations there before matching and same thing for the program I currently help run.

Only do the away rotation if it's something that truly interests you.
