Anybody know anything about St. John Northshore residency program???

If you are referring to the one in MI, which I think you are then from what I hear its a pretty solid program with a healthy balance of surgery, clinic, and academics. I'll let Feli fill you in on this one because that's his home starting July 1st 😀

Pretty full review on the StJohn program^

Since I wrote that, the residency program sponsorship changed from 100 bed StJohn North Shores hospital to 800+ bed (and expanding) StJohn Hospital main location with trauma center designation, many various residency programs, etc. The pod residents were already covering pod surg cases and doing many medicine and surgery rotations at the main hospital even before sponsorship change, however. Things will be in flux, but it sounds like the program will continue activity at NS (pod clinic, ER coverage, etc) while transitioning a fair amount of activities to the main hospital and probably taking some ER call there. The program changes will probably end up increasing the residents' inpatient management and trauma experiences.

This program, like any program with high surgical numbers, has you driving around to many hospitals and surgery centers to scrub with a lot of attendings. Lots of elective cases, good variety, and a good amount of trauma without being directly in the inner city (most StJohn locations that NS residents cover are a bit east of Detroit... Grosse Pointe, St Claire, MtClemens, Harrison, etc). StJohn system also has Providence Hosp residency in the western suburbs, which has its own good quality pod residency, and the newer StJohn Macomb Oakland program, which was is directed by a StJohn NS alumni.

StJohn NS was my favorite student rotation and top choice in match, so I'm moving there to start next month. If you decide to extern or do core months at the program, they currently provide externs free bed + food at the NS hospital. Car is recommended, but if you don't have one on your clerkship, you could ride with the residents who you are going to surgery with each day. Feel free to PM me if you want more info or to want stay at my house in Grosse Pointe near the main StJohn Hosp during your rotation (small fee since my utilities go up).
