Do you have to complete residency at the dental school you attended or is that completely seperate? If seperate, is preferance given to graduates? Probably!

So basically, can a IUSD grad do Ortho residency at UCLA? (just an example).

Yes, residency is completely separate. You will have to apply to those programs, submit recommendations, application fees, the whole bit.

Some schools reserve spots for their own graduates, some don't, getting into some depends on the people you know (outright nepotism in some cases LOL), yadda yadda... Postgrad programs cover the whole spectrum.
